How it works

What Foracal does to the water in your home.

It does not soften the water, and it does not treat it with electricity. It adds a tiny dose of a food-grade product that stops limescale building up. Here it is, without the jargon.

First, the problem

How hard your water is depends on how much calcium and magnesium it carries. The more there is, the harder the water. When it is heated or it evaporates, those salts settle as limescale: on the washing machine element, in the boiler, in the shower, on the taps, on the screen.

The result is appliances that heat less well and last less long, cloudy glasses out of the dishwasher, blocked shower holes and white deposits that are hard to shift.

Washing machine and boiler

The element furs up and fails sooner.

Dishwasher

Glasses and glassware with a white film.

Shower and taps

Blocked holes, less flow.

Bathroom

Marks on the screen, tiles and taps.

The solution

Three steps, no electricity.

  1. It is fitted where the water comes in

As close as possible to the point where the mains enters the house, after the meter. That way everything downstream is protected: pipework, boiler, appliances and taps.

  2. Every litre gets a tiny dose

The dosing mechanism, inside the cartridge, adds a maximum of 5 parts per million of food-grade silicopolyphosphates to the water. Always the right dose, with no blockages or overdosing. It needs no electricity: it works as the water passes through.

  3. Limescale stops building up

Calcium and magnesium salts stop settling in your plumbing. On top of that, the product forms a protective film inside the pipes that guards them against corrosion.

Water comes in at the meter, passes through Foracal and reaches the whole house already treated.

What you notice, and when

The doser works from the moment it is commissioned. Within a few days you notice the difference: fewer limescale marks on taps and shower screen, and appliances working as they should.

Over time, the product also helps to reduce much of the scale and rust already inside the pipework, preventing further damage.

And can you drink the water?

Yes. The product dosed is food grade and the dose is a maximum of 5 parts per million. The doser has a built-in non-return valve, so treated water cannot flow back into the mains.

If the house goes some time without water being used, after a holiday for instance, follow your water company's advice on running the taps before using the water.

Approvals

Non-return valve approved across Europe and in the United States.

The system carries a non-return valve approved by the drinking water certification bodies of nine countries. The dosing method complies with standard EN 1208 for products used to treat water intended for human consumption, within the FAO and WHO regulations.

The pre-filter, the first barrier

Mains water does not always arrive clean: along the way it picks up sand and particles that wear out taps, pipes and appliances. The pre-filter on the Complete System holds them back with a 50 micron stainless steel mesh, with no noticeable pressure loss. We recommend fitting it so the doser works at its best.

What Foracal is not

It is not a water softener. A conventional softener softens the water by changing its composition. Foracal does not soften the water or strip out limescale in one go: it stops it building up and protects your plumbing against corrosion.

It needs no electricity and no consumable other than the cartridge, which is changed roughly every 35,000 litres.

It needs no building work. It is fitted into the pipe, after the meter, with a brief shut-off of the supply.
